"Marxism consists of thousands of truths, but they all boil down to one: It's right to rebel against reactionaries."[1] • Progress is born in chaos. And originality comes from destruction
Without the efforts of the Chinese Communist Party, without the Chinese Communists as the mainstay of the Chinese people, China can never achieve independence and liberation, or industrialization and the modernization of her agriculture. • "On Coalition Government" (April 24, 1945), Selected Works, Vol. III, p. 318.*
Goals • Goal: Make Everyone Equal/Make a Classless Society • Goal: Put Work & Country Above Family • Goal: Increase Literacy • Goal: Increase Agricultural Production/Become Self-Sufficient in Agriculture • Goal: Modernize China • Goal: Ensure Equality and Loyalty to the CCP
In Theory: Great Leap Forward • 1958 - Modernize China • Create communes, with collective farming (5,000 families) • efficiency, greater food production • everything is provided, even entertainment • “houses of happiness” • By 1958, 700 million in 26,578 • People build internal improvements to modernize China
In Practice: Great Leap Forward "it is possible to accomplish any task whatsoever." 1958 • Communes control everything • Work for state, all receive a share of harvest, rest go to state • Families split • Unrealistic expectations • "bourgeois reactionary" • Food production fell • Industrial distraction (furnaces) • 59’ a bad year! • Quantity not quality • Not built to last
"The chaos caused was on a grand scale, and I take responsibility. Comrades, you must all analyze your own responsibility. If you have to fart, fart. You will feel much better for it." • Mao Zedong
In Theory: Cultural Revolution • 1966, new generation should experience a revolution • Created a “Red Guard” • Fight the “capitalists” • Forced the “former” elite to do manual labor
In Practice: Cultural Revolution • Constant fighting & chaos • Millions tortured, imprisoned and killed • Production slowed "Destroy the old world; build a new world."
The New Government • Totalitarian State • 1 party dictatorship • Rights not protected • Critics silenced • Enforced Communist views • Government leaders above the masses • Better jobs, luxury items, controlled government
