Reading Textbooks Another strategy to use while reading a textbook
Previous StrategySQ3R • Survey • Question • Read • Recite • Review
Another Strategy • Similar to SQ3R, but not the same • Peek • Question • Answer • Quiz
Peek • Look through the section/chapter • Focus on headings, bolded or highlighted words, pictures, and anything else that sticks out • Read the introduction and conclusion and read through the questions at the end of the section/chapter
Question • On a separate piece of paper, turn the headings into questions and leave space beneath them to write answers • Do this for EVERY heading and subheading • Example: Change the heading “Formula” to “How do I write formulas?”
Answer • Read through the chapter and answer all questions • Answer question on the same paper as the questions • Put the answers in your own words, because you’ll remember your own words better than the book’s words
Quiz • Reread your notes • Answer the questions you have written from memory • The answers you can’t remember, you should continue to quiz yourself on
Peek, Question, Answer, Quiz • Use this strategy when reading a textbook • This will help you move the information into your long term memory
