  1. SEIN-SEGEGreece, 18-21 september 2010 Working with parents: The Study Circle by Sabina Manea, Romania

  2. The Study Circle • Participative method used for facilitating the decision taking process • Can be used in many fields of activity • Members can learn one from another • The SC is a democratic and integrative group

  3. The Study Circle • The learners are in the same time decision takers and main actors  • SC makes use of social competences and creativity • The circle= participants are equal, there is no boss • Circle’s object : established by learners, usually a subject that interests everybody

  4. The Study Circle • Members of the SC are looking together for a theme which interests everybody: each member makes a proposition, and they vote for the most appealing one • Object : how to raise parents’ interest in how and when their children use Internet

  5. Possible solutions • Contact other parents through active, trained parents (the most efficient way of disseminating pieces of information) • Implicate the school psychologist in the matter • Schools may use Internet for keeping in touch with parents, for letting them know their childrens’ grades (parents cannot control something they do not master) • Emphasize parents’ competences, socialize (cocktails /informal 5 o’clock reunions and discussions at school) (if parents get together they are stronger) • Use of case study, as departure point • Questionnaire/Interview made by students for their parents

  6. Conclusions • It is necessary to establish very clearly functioning rules of the SC • The SC can be activated whenever needed and can handle homework • The SC pushes its participants to acquire communication competences, even though they do not speak out from the very beginning of the session • The SC can be formed and worked on in time • The moderator is an active part of the debate, roles may change with every session
