  16. 3. Perhaps you found them: • Angry, mad • Because: • Squinting eyes • Showing teeth • Eyebrows are squished in

  17. 4. Perhaps you found them: • Scared, fearful • Because: • Eyebrows are raised • Eyes are wide open • mouth is frowning & open

  18. 5. Perhaps you found them: • Surprised, shocked • Because: • Eyes are wide open • Eyebrows are up • Mouth open wide

  19. 6. Perhaps you found them: • Angry, disappointed, agitated, disgusted • Because: • Frowning • Eyebrows are pushed together • Nose pushed up

  20. 7. Perhaps you found them: • Not quite sure? • That’s what happened when you get too much plastic surgery!

  21. 2. Emblems: • Substitutions for words • Specific verbal translation • EX: “OK,” “peace,” “be quiet”

  22. 3. Illustrators • Accompany and literally illustrate the verbal message • EX: saying, “Let’s go” while motioning with your hands for them to go, it was “this big” while showing how big, making a circular motion while talking about a circle

  23. 4. Regulators: • Monitor, maintain, or control the speaking of another individual • EX: nod, “keep going,” “speed up,” confused look

  24. 5. Adaptors: • Satisfy a need, are usually unconscious, usually show negative emotions (anxious, annoyed) • EX: tapping your pen on the desk, clicking your pen, tapping your foot
