  2. What is Popular Culture? • Popular culture- the arts, artifacts, entertainment, fads, beliefs and values that are shared by a large segment of a population. • FADS • TRENDS • ICONS

  3. FAD • Fads – something that becomes very popular with a small segment of society and lasts only a short period of time and usually never return.

  4. TRENDS • Are accepted by a small segment of a population but have a tendency to comeback and be popular again. Big Belt Buckles. Classic Heels Head Bands

  5. ICONS • a name, face, picture, edifice or even a person readily recognized as having well known significance. • These items, ideas, and people often are seen as the originator and those who brought it to mass population.

  6. What Qualifies an ICON? • The ability to stay true to the art, not the money made from the product. • Ability to create something or remain timeless.

  7. Mediums for popular culture • Music • Movies • Fashion • Television • Video Games • Sports • Jewelry • Books • Art • Food • Hairstyles

  8. Societal issues with pop culture • Popular culture is not always accepted by the mainstream culture. • Ex. early Rock N’ Roll in the 1950’s. • Hip Hop– gangsta rap in early 1990’s • Fashion– Miniskirt, bikini, baggy clothes • Video Games– GTA series, first person shooters.

  9. When does it loose it’s popularity. • A fad or trend looses popularity when: • Population which accepts it grows older. • The fad or trend is complicated to keep doing. • It becomes a crime to follow. • The Icon has his/her popularity diminished.

  10. Is popularity important? • How often does popularity change? • Do you yourself buy into popularity? • Who would most likely use popularity?

  11. What happens to a product once it looses popularity? • How many items do you still own that are considered unpopular by your friends? • Is popularity important in High school?
