Definitions of Civics and Culture • Study of the past regarding the living of the ancient people with regards to their culture and society. • Study of our country’s history begins with turning or looking back at our ancestors. • Study of the records of significant events, places and people in the past.
Importance of studying Civics and Culture • To relate the present to past, for it is through the understanding of the past that we develop a grasp of current and thus make wise decisions for the future. • Through history we learn of the great men and women were able to stand for bravery, nationalism, courage and patriotism and whose lives serve as patterns worth emulating. • It helps the students develop the values and attitudes that will make them worthy members of the community and be good citizens of the country.
Definitions of geography • Greek word “geo” means land and “grapein” means to write, meaning to “write about something”/ “describe the earth” • Deals with the ways by which environments, societies and places actually work and how they may be made to work cohesively. • It is concerned with the analysis of social and environmental processes.

Study of geography • One must be familiar with using a globe or maps. • Determines the resources of the country • Affects the natural resources • Influences the kind, quantity and distribution of resources
A Globe - a small-scale model of the earth that shows its true shape, if properly constructed. - the oldest existing globe was constructed by Martin Behaimof Germany in 1492 and is now in the Germanic Museum of Nunberg, Germany - can be helpful, its use may be limited in certain ways - is not portable and can be quite bulky - the earth locations in the globe cannot be seen in one given setting - you have to roll it to look for a specific location.
A Map • is a representation of all or a portion of the earth’s surface • usually drawn to scale on a plane or flat surface with all locations seen at once • can be carried conveniently for they can be folded or rolled • knowledge of map reading is a necessity in the study of geography
