Living Resources • People depend on living ocean resources • Fish and other marine organisms(lobsters, oysters, shrimp, crabs, scallops, etc.) are gathered from the ocean to feed humans • Fish and other marine life are being raised in ocean farms to help feed growing human population and to prevent over fishing. • Kelp and other seaweed and algae provide atmospheric oxygen through photosynthesis • Seaweed also provides products which help in food preparation
Nonliving Resources • Oil and natural gas deposits are from marine micro -organisms that died and were deposited in ancient sea floors hundreds of millions of years ago. • Humans are dependant on these nonrenewable resources that are used faster than they can be replenished. • Sound(seismic) waves are used to locate deposits in rock layers.
Desalination • Drinkable water is made from ocean water through the process of desalination. • Ocean water is piped to a desalination plant and filtered to remove algae and small particles. • Water is forced through a semi-permeable reverse osmosis membrane at very high pressure, which strips off the salt molecules and only lets water molecules through. • It takes massive amounts of energy and is very expensive to complete this process. • Less than 1% of the world’s water is supplied through desalination.
