  3. ADS • ADS is a function for use by air traffic services (ATS) in which aircraft automatically transmit, via a data link, data derived from on-board navigation systems. As a minimum, the data includes aircraft identification and three-dimensional position. Additional data may be provided as appropriate ( ICAO Doc 9524, FANS/4 Report). • ADS reports content, reporting interval, triggering events, etc are defined in an ADSContractestablished by the ATS system with each aircraft. • To cater for emergency situations the function also provides for a pilot-initiated communication which indicates the state of emergency and includes a basic ADS report and the flight identification. 4. CPDLC ATM Design, Development and Implementation Engineering Division

  5. CPDLC (I) • CPDLC is a technique that supports direct communications between air traffic controllers and pilots, using data link. • CPDLC was designed to overcome problems experienced in voice communications (distortion, mispronunciation, misunderstandings, etc ) as well as assisting with other limitations (e.g. frequency congestion, etc). ATM Design, Development and Implementation Engineering Division

  6. CPDLC (II) • It is imperative to recognise that CPDLC is not simply a communications medium for exchanging textual information. • Because CPDLC can interface directly with the aircraft avionics and permit the automatic transmission of reports (e.g. when the aircraft reached an assigned altitude), it is also expected that significant safety benefits and workload reduction could be realised. • Automation includes the pilot’s ability to load route clearances, cleared flight level, etc, from CPDLC messages automatically into the FMS. 8. FANS-1/A • Aircraft equipage normally includes : • ADS-C & CPDLC • VHF & SATCOM Data Links over ACARS • FMS & RNAV • 3 Inertial Reference Systems • Classic Navigation Systems (VOR, DME, ILS, etc) • GPS • Navigation Package is RNP 4 Capable ATM Design, Development and Implementation Engineering Division

  10. SACCAN INTRODUCTION • The SACCAN system is in fact a reduced replica of a larger system called ECA that Aena uses for trials, experimentation, evaluation and validation. ECA was used by Aena for participating in “ADS Europe”. • SACCAN re-uses most of ECA software. • Both ECA and SACCAN have been developed by the Spanish firmINDRA based on specifications prepared by Aena. • SACCAN and ECA are based on the philosophy, algorithms, and functions of the ADS-SSRIntegration Study carried out by Aena in 1994. • Experience gained during the ESA PRODAT/PROSAT Programme (1982-1988) was also taken on board. 11. SACCAN GENERAL OBJECTIVES • Familiarise air traffic controllers and technicians of CANARIAS ACC with ADS and CPDLC applications; • Evaluate and validate the new functions and operational procedures required for efficient ADS and CPDLC use; • Assess, based on real data, the safety, efficiency and economical benefits of the application of ADS and CPDLC in the Canary Islands; and • Finally, provide services to FANS 1/A aircraft and ICAO compliant (ATN) aircraft when available. 34. ADS DOWNLINK MESSAGES NOTE: THE FLIGHT MANAGEMENT FUNCTION LOCATES UP TO 10 POINTS BETWEEN CURRENT POSITION AND THE REQUESTED TIME, WHERE A CHANGE OF ALTITUDE, SPEED OR COURSE IS PREDICTED. FOR EACH OF THESE POINTS A GROUP IS FORMED. THE PROJECTED TIME IS THE TRAVEL TIME TO THE POINT AND REFERS TO A PERIOD OF TIME (E. G. 2 HOURS ) ATM Design, Development and Implementation Engineering Division

  35. ADS DOWNLINK MESSAGES NOTE: THE FLIGHT MANAGEMENT FUNCTION LOCATES THE POINT AT WHICH THE AIRCRAFT IS PROJECTED TO BE AT THE REQUESTED TIME. IF THE REQUESTED TIME FALLS PAST THE END OF THE ROUTE, THE LAST WAY POINT WILL BE REPORTED. THE PROJECTED TIME IS THE TRAVEL TIME TO THE POINT AND REFERS TO A PERIOD OF TIME (E. G. 2 HOURS ) ATM Design, Development and Implementation Engineering Division

  36. MODES OF ADS OPERATION • Normal Modes of Operation *: • Periodic Contract • Demand Contract • Event Contract • Emergency * * Ground activated. Can be active simultaneously * Activated by pilot Note: “Cancel Contract” and “Cancel All Contracts and Terminate Connection” messages are used by the ATS system to terminate ADS or change a contract.
