  1. Title of piece: Aint I A Woman? Author: Sojourner Truth CLAIM: The main point made in the piece Women are capable of doing everything men can do, and therefore women should have the same rights as men. Reason 1: While some may think women need men’s help, she has done everything without men’s help. Reason 2: She has done better work than the men who did the same work (like planting ploughing, and gathering.) Reason 3: If one woman (Eve) can turn the world upside down, then all the women in this assembly can turn it right side up again. And if they want to do it, men better let them. • Evidence for Reason 1 • No one helped her • Get into carriages • Step over puddles • Over ditches • Get any best place Evidence for Reason 2 Her arm is strong “no man can head me” Evidence for Reason 3 Women have intellect

  2. Logical appeals: (Reasoning) If she can do things like get into carriages and step over puddles without the help of a man, then she should be able to think and vote, just as a man can. Ethical appeals: (Authority) Emotional appeals: (Feelings) Author’s overall tone: (E.g. sincere, humorous, urgent, apathetic, longing, admiring, angry, inquisitive, arrogant, beseeching, humble, dissatisfied, condemning) Author’s intent: (To get us to think a certain way; to call us to action) Assessment of credibility: (Is the author to be believed and/or followed? Why/why not?)
