  2. What is Human Rights ? • The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law.

  3. Current Human Rights Violations • Apartheid- most common and well known • Genocide- killing of a racial or cultural group • Slavery- trying to control another person • Torture- causing extreme mental or physical pain • Rape- forcing someone into sexual activity without consent • Terrorism- use of violence against civilians for political reasons

  4. Current Human Rights Violations • Enforced sterilization- forced sterilization by a government • Starvation- lack of essential nutrients • War crime- violations of the rules of war (taking prisoners, attacking innocent civilians, attacking hospitals) • Poverty- having very little money or possessions • Human Trafficking- crime where individuals are captured for exploitative reasons.

Current Human Rights Violations • Racism- discriminating against a certain group of people based on their race • Woman’s rights- equal opportunities for women • Refugees (Darfur and Iraq)- someone who flees their country for safety • Children’s Rights and Child Labor- employment of children under age; usually with poor working facilities and long hours • Which rights is your country protecting, and where does your country need improvement?

  10. Those are just a few of the human rights issues around the world • You can look up maps of other human rights issues around the world to see how common they are in your country and other parts of the world

  11. Order Vs. Human Rights • Some countries argue that some rights are denied from citizens to protect the country and its order. • Some countries claim human rights give individuals too much power over the country itself and the government. • To some countries freedom is considered a threat to the country and it’s security. • Which is more important: Order or Human Rights?

The United Nations • Working on protecting human rights since 1945 • Investigate Human Rights violations and complaints • Adopts treaties on Human Rights topics • By signing them a country agrees to follow them • Countries are Censored if there is a violation • The Human Rights Council- • Created in 2006 • Strengthens, protects, and promotes human rights worldwide • Includes an Advisory Committee which gives expert advice on solving human rights issues and violations.

  13. Why should we care? • Prevent future problems • We must learn from the past, and keep the world from making the same mistakes… • The Holocaust • Rwanda Genocide • Slavery in the United States • Etc… • Protecting human rights protects international security

  14. Why should we care? • Human Rights is the central theme. Without protecting human rights we can’t help all the other categories of the day. • “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” • -Margaret Mead • “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” • - Martin Luther King. Jr.

What to do? • Education- • Seminars, classes during school, global awareness • What options do we have in the United States? • What options does your country have? • Moving towards intercultural understanding- • If people learn more about other cultures they’ll be more likely to accept them • Tolerance of other races, religions, ethnicities, genders, etc. • How can countries spread knowledge of other cultures?

  16. What to do? • Developed vs. Undeveloped countries • Does wealth have an affect on human rights? • Should more developed countries help protect and aid the undeveloped countries? • Partnership • Build trust between countries and within countries
