Block 2 Algorithm Drop Schedule (aka NPP/J1 Algorithm Paradigm Shift) IDPS Splinter June 8, 2011
Overview • Issue: Planned “Build 2.1” algorithm drops in 2011 and 2012: • 2.1 drops are currently planned too early in the lifecycle when compared with reality • Background: • Raised issue at the IDPS Splinter on April 5, 2011 • Government confirmed the dates are unrealistic, and that any major changes to algorithms will likely occur on the NPP Cal/Val path vs. reactions to J1 sensor deltas • Revisited issue at IDPS Splinter on May 10, 2011 • IDPS proposed two options to handle “2.1” drop schedule: 1) Rebaseline hours into FY14-15; or 2) Repurpose the hours to support Cal/Val • Government indicated their support for option (2)
Status • Option (2) briefed to Raytheon PMO over last several weeks • Direction was to incorporate option (2) algorithm paradigm changes into DRW12 planning cycle • Option (2) will take effect in Oct 2011 with approval of DRW12 BCR
Option 2 Effects • Algorithm drops • Drop sizes as listed in the JPSS proposal • Schedule as planned during DRW 11 • Future Block 2 update budget reduced by 5,000 DSLOC from 11,750 to 6,750 Re-purpose FY11-12 drops to Cal/Val algorithm support in FY12-13
Option 2 Effects • Re-purposing 5,000 DSLOC to Cal/Val Algorithm Support • 75% of the DSLOC (3,750 DSLOC) to Sustainment for Cal/Val algorithm changes from NASA • Remaining 25% (1,250 DSLOC) used by Development to keep development algorithm baseline in sync with Sustainment • Sustainment Cal/Val • Currently scoped to accommodate 9.5% change in PRO code • Additional DSLOC would increase code change capacity to ~11.8% of PRO code
Summary • Intend to repurpose FY11-12 C1 Algorithm hours for Cal/Val support in DRW12 planning • Provides additional algorithm code change capacity during Cal/Val • Budget for future Block 2 updates is reduced
Dev – Sustainment Hrs • Proposed change retains total algorithm hours, but re-spreads them between Development and Sustainment • Slight shift between fiscal years
NPP Cal Val Algorithm Support • Proposed change adds surge staff for Sustainment algorithm updates during Cal/Val
NPP Cal Val Algorithm Support • Proposed change retains staff for merging algorithm changes into development baseline
