Learning Objectives • By the end of the lesson, you should be able to: • state the harmful consequences of sexually transmitted disease like: • syphilis • gonorrhea • AIDS • explain that syphilis is caused by a bacterium which is transmitted during sexual intercourse • describe the symptoms, signs, effects and treatment of syphilis • discuss the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and methods by which it may be controlled
Introduction • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): • diseases transmitted mainly through sexual intercourse • caused by bacteria and viruses • affect the reproductive system (may also affect other body parts) • may not show visible signs or symptoms pass on the disease unknowingly to their partners. • infections can be fatal • Examples: • Syphilis • Gonorrhea • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
Video Task • Deliverable: Video of a Role-Play • Duration: 3 to 5 minutes video • Format: mpeg format • Content: • Causes, Signs/Symptoms/Effects and Treatments/Cures for • Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and AIDS. • Character must NEVER reveal the STI throughout the video. • Audience should be able to guess it from the dialogue or soliloquy. • Group Size: In groups of 4 or 5 • Grading: • Based on rubrics provided. • Will constitute 5 marks of Term 3 Term Test.
Who is at Risk of AIDS? Unprotected sexual intercourse- most likely they do not use contraceptions. Multiple sex partners Sharing of infected needles – mostly affect drug addicts. Pregnancy / Childbirth Blood Transfusion
Prevention of STDs Keep to one sexual partner and avoid pre-marital sex. Avoid direct contact between the penis and vagina with the use of a suitable contraceptive e.g. a condom Avoid abusing drugs by sharing contaminated needles Ensure that ear piercing equipment has been sterilised before being used on you. Don’t share toothbrushes and shavers etc.
