Alan Freed • 1942- Landed first broadcasting Job at WSKT • Hired at WINS, That January he held a landmark dance promoting African American performers as Rock n Roll artists. • First Dj to play Rock n Roll on the radio.
What is Rock n Roll?? • “When the defiant beat of Rock n Roll burst on to the American scene in mid-1950’s, few people remained impartial about its sound or its impact” • Rock n Roll is a type of music that had grown out of rhythm and blues. • It had a driving beat and simple melodies.
Elvis Presley! • Elvis Presley was the first “real” rock and roll star • He brought together music from both sides of the color line. • He was a teen idol and a role model for generations.
Chuck Berry! • He was one of rock & roll's greatest song writers and developed some of its earliest trademark guitar licks. • His knowledge of the pop market made it possible for him to break color barriers and play to an integrated audience.
Big Mamma Thornton! • She was an African-American blues singer, songwriter, drummer and harmonica player. • She taught her self to play the drums and harmonica and regularly played both instruments on stage. • She was an African American woman who was very talented.
Musical Diversity • Many African American people wrote the music, but white people performed it and became famous for it. • Blues and rhythm music was started by African Americans and it later turned into Rock n Roll.
