There was a couple, Charles and Ray Eames who ever since their marriage in 1941, had collaborated in various varieties of projects ranging from film production to furniture production. Acknowledged for many of their creations, their everlasting masterpieces were in the field of furniture designing. Their model and designs have been adopted as a philosophy in designing.
This is a story of the creation of the very special and one of their best works, the Charles Eames lounge chair. After years of toiling they manufactured this chair for the furniture company they worked for, Herman Miller. This chair finally came out in the market in 1956 and till date remains an example of one of the best pieces to be made ever in that field.
This chair was made of leather and molded plywood. The plywood was made of planks of Brazilian rosewood. Also it had rubber spacers to separate the spines of the chair. Charles and Ray used rubber washers which were glued to the backrest of the chair. They were also screwed in the lumbar support. This helped the chair to flex from the backrest. Rubber washers also supported the armrest. The manufacturers made this chair with an aluminum base which could swivel around; this enabled the chair to turn. They also had the zipped deep leather cushions.
Charles believed that for designing something the foremost requirement is to know what is wanted from the product. When we go to buy a lounge chair we think of it as a place where we can rest and forget all our worries. This expectation was the major concern of the manufacturers as they were intent on giving their customers 'a refuge from the strains of modern living'. Needless to say that they succeeded in their purpose. The lounge chair remains one of the most stylish and also comfortable lounge chairs. After around half a century also this model stays in production and sale!
