Former Rhodesia • As we all know from reading Alexandra Fuller’s memoir, Don’t Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight… • Zimbabwe was formerly known as The Republic of Rhodesia. • (1965-1979) • Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) fought for their independence in Rhodesia. • Help from China and Russia. • Known as “The Bush War” and “The Second Chimurenga”. • All in all, Robert Mugabe won against the Rhodesian Government and was now an independent nation. • Renamed The Republic of Zimbabwe.

President Robert Mugabe • Born: February 21, 1924 • Rose to power after the Bush War, where he was a political prisoner. • Emerged as a hero. • Since then, he has kicked thousands of white farm owners out. • Printed trillions of Zimbabwe dollars • Triggering hyper inflation • Very racist against whites and homosexuals • Zimbabwe’s economy is in a death spiral • Food and Oil shortages • hospitals continue to be overcrowded with patients
