Former Rhodesia • As we all know from reading Alexandra Fuller’s memoir, Don’t Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight… • Zimbabwe was formerly known as The Republic of Rhodesia. • (1965-1979) • Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) fought for their independence in Rhodesia. • Help from China and Russia. • Known as “The Bush War” and “The Second Chimurenga”. • All in all, Robert Mugabe won against the Rhodesian Government and was now an independent nation. • Renamed The Republic of Zimbabwe.

The People • Population: 13,500,000 citizens • Per Capita Income: $188 • Unemployment Rate: 80% • Female Life Expectancy: 38.5! • Male Life Expectancy: 40! • HIV/AIDS Pandemic • Human Rights Violated • Child Soldiers • “Zimbabwe used to be a place with so much hope, its future looked wonderful. As a black woman I really felt we were going somewhere. A man took over and gradually turned into a monster. He has torn the place to pieces - like a cat playing with a squeaking mouse…It is a tragedy.‘” –Anonymous resident

Location • Capital: Harare • Location: Between South Africa and Zambia. • Size: Slightly larger than Montana. • Popular Natural Resources: Coal, chromium ore, asbestos. • Popular Agriculture: Corn, cotton, tobacco • 7 Hours Ahead of Eastern time • Victoria Falls is Located on the Border of Zambia - World’s longest curtain of falling water.

President Robert Mugabe • Born: February 21, 1924 • Rose to power after the Bush War, where he was a political prisoner. • Emerged as a hero. • Since then, he has kicked thousands of white farm owners out. • Printed trillions of Zimbabwe dollars • Triggering hyper inflation • Very racist against whites and homosexuals • Zimbabwe’s economy is in a death spiral • Food and Oil shortages • hospitals continue to be overcrowded with patients
