  1. Modeling and Integrating Biomass Pre processing Operations S. Sokhansanj & A. Turhollow In collaboration with INL Sudhagar Mani University of British Columbia Tony Bi University of British Columbia sokhansanjs@ornl.gov • Objectives: • Develop enabling tools to optimize biomass preprocessing. • Size reduction, fractionation, blending, artificial drying, densification, wet storage Energy input Pre processing Exhaust gas Chopped biomass Rotary dryer Hammer mill Pellet mill Flue gas 300-1500 kWh/t 30-50 kWh/t 30-85 kWh/t Pellets Fuel burner Fuel Baseline cost of preprocessing Wet storage Accomplished: Detailed heat and mass transfer model for drying and validated with industrial dryer data. Overall energy and mass balances for size reduction, blending, and densification. The above models have been integrated to estimate a base line cost for biomass (stover) densification. For wet storage, model formulation is initiated.
