Polarity and Intermolecular Forces What is polarity (polar vs. nonpolar)? What are the three main types of IMFs?
Bond Strength • Who’s the toughest? GREATEST STRENGTH • Triple Bond • Double Bond • Single Bond LEAST STRENGTH
Triple Bond • Single Bond
What is polarity? • molecule with two poles (+ and -) caused by unequal sharing of electrons
Non-Polar Covalent • tug of war between shared e- and + nucleus • e- are shared equally • atoms in the bond pull equally • H2, O2, Diatomic atoms
Polar Covalent • e- are shared UNEQUALLY in the bond • more electronegative element attracts more e- (-) while other element (+) • one end (+) and one end (-) • H2O, NH3
Attractive Forces • TYPES OF ATTRACTIONS – NOT TRUE BONDS • Some molecules or parts of molecules are attracted to others and held together by forces of attraction but are not bonded.
What is a dipole? • when an atom has two poles • positive + pole and negative - pole
Intermolecular Forces • Are attractive forces • Not True Bonds!
Dipole-Dipole • Dipole – Dipole: attraction between neighboring polar molecules
Hydrogen Bond • H paired with only F, N, or O .. ONLY
Dispersion • instant dipoles caused as e- move within energy levels • similar to a pile up on the electron super highway e- Pile Up
