  2. An Integrated Curriculum Application Training for Increasing the Academic Achievement of ELLs

What is MAGIC? • An Instructional Framework for Maximizing Academic Gains through Integrated Curriculum (MAGIC) • Funded through the U.S. Department of Education National Professional Development Grant fund • Partnership project designed for middle and high school teachers to address cultural and instructional needs of ELLs and their families.

  4. Why Do I Need MAGIC? • Demographic Changes and New Immigration Pattern : Significant increase of “new neighbors” in communities and schools. • Focus on Standard-based Instruction for improving achievement for all students, but are specially critical for students from diverse ethnic, cultural, linguistic and economic background. • Need for bridging cultures between home and school in order to close the language and academic achievement gaps between ELLs and their peers.

MAGIC Overarching Goal • To improve the learning outcomes of ELLs through the preparation of teachers in applying research-based instructional and assessment practices for ELLs • To build a strong collaborative work culture between school and family that will develop the long-term capacity for change

Overall Strategies • Cooperation, networking and capacity building among teachers, schools, families of ELLs to respond to educational needs of ALL students • Best practice sharing between ESL instructors and regular content teachers, and mentors ensuring the success of ELLs • Academic content and language integration to enhance language acquisition, language development and scaffolding instruction for ELLs • Use of home and school “Funds of knowledge” to enhance classroom teaching and learning practices

  7. MAGIC COMPONENTS: • ICAT COURSE • PAR COURSE • COACHING/MENTORING • FAMILY INVOLVEMENT • LIMITED ESL ADD-ON CERTIFICATION SCHOLARSHIPS

What Will I Learn in ICAT ? • The laws and latest research that apply to all ELL students • The stages of second language acquisition, language development and the acculturation process • Differentiated learning strategies that work for ELL students ? • How to understand and apply WIDA standards? • How to develop sample lesson plan that incorporates academic content and language standards?

  9. ICAT COURSEWORK • Contains contents from the following field of study and practice: • Second Language Acquisition • WIDA Assessment • Multicultural Education • Differentiated Learning • Teaching reading and writing to ELLs • Parent involvement

What will I Learn in PAR class? • How to understand and incorporate content, language and family funds of knowledge for instructional needs of ELL students? • How to use the effective instructional strategies based on student data? • How to review and refine the instructional adjustments you made during the lesson?

  11. PAR Class • “The teacher cannot rely on either instinct alone or prepackaged sets of techniques. Instead, she or he must think about what is taking place, what the options are and so on, in a critical, analytical way. In other words the teacher must engage in reflection.” John W.   13. PAR Course work contains:Questions to Foster Reflection • What was I trying to accomplish? • How did I go about completing the lesson and solving problems I had along the way ? • What did I do well? • What I have difficulty with? • What have I learned/what would I do differently

Becoming MAGIC Mentors • Pre-requisite: graduate of the ED POL 688 course! • Complete a WIDA Standard Training • Assist in the coordination & facilitation of the ICAT course • Assist with the project’s evaluation & planning with the MAGIC partners • Work with participants to facilitate understanding of course assignments & challenges in applying knowledge to classroom instructions. • Provide other related support to participants. • Assist in the recruitment of potential participants, specifically middle and high schools content teachers. • Work with the coaches in offering feedback with videotaped sessions. • Attend mentor/coach monthly meetings. • Disseminate the best practices with the MAGIC Project staff.

  17. Becoming Coaches • Pre-requisite: Must be a mentor before becoming a coach. • Facilitate the PAR sessions. • Coach the new mentors in making connection between the training materials and classroom practices. • Assist participant to implement WIDA standards in developing a set of skills that support differentiating instructions (lesson plan and assessments). • Conduct routine check-ins with mentors to provide support and practical “how to” assistance.

  18. Becoming Coaches (Cont.’) • Work collaboratively with participant to videotape classroom practices. • Provide feedbacks on the videotaped lesson plan with participant(s). • Document progress participants are making in the use of the training strategies that support ELL instructions (ie. journal, etc.). • Assist with the project’s evaluation and planning with the MAGIC partners monthly. • Assist in the recruitment of potential participants, specifically middle and high schools content teachers. • Attend mentor/coach monthly meetings. • Disseminate the best practices with the MAGIC Project staff.
