Course overview • The purpose of the module is to provide the fundamental technical concepts essential for the design and implementation of wireless networks • This module concentrates on NETWORKS operated in a wireless environment, focussing on the network-level viewpoint • Aims: • To develop an understanding of the theory and practice of building wireless networks. • To provide an in-depth study of the requirements of wireless communications, including the development of standards for wireless networks. • To examine current developments associated with wireless communications and networks.

Learning outcomes • After completing the module you should be able to: • Critically review the fundamental technical concepts, design and implementation of wireless networks. • Apply creative skills concerning the approaches and practices used to build wireless networks. • Critically evaluate the provision of wireless networks and their impact on current wireless networking environments.

  5. Syllabus • Week 1: Overview & Definitions • Weeks 2 – 4: Architectures & Applications • Architectures (satellite, cellular, LAN, etc.) • Wireless LAN, GSM and UMTS • Bluetooth, Ad Hoc, Applications • Weeks 5 – 7: Internetworking • IP mobility issues, Mobile IP, Cellular IP • TCP issues, WAP • QoS and Security • Weeks 8 – 10: Communications • Resource management, interference etc. • Signals, Antennas, Multiplexing, Modulation • Modulation, Spread Spectrum, Radio Management • Case Studies: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

  6. Assessment details • 25% Coursework • Wireless Network Design • 75% Exam • ‘3 out of 4’ style • 7 past papers available
