Proposed AA Degree (Hybrid/Campus Based and NOT Entirely Online) • Deparment Chair Survey – compiled 12-06-10 “Which classes (if any) would your discipline/department support if an AA Degree is offered online at Mission”Department Chairs in Chemistry, Science, Math, PE and Speech expressed their desire to have only hybrid/campus based classes in their disciplines to provide “hands on”, “on campus” instruction, practice, demonstrations, exercises, labs, and, the like, to ensure quality education in their disciplines. DE Enrollment 2009-2010 • DE Enrollment = 3791 (7.39% of total enrollment) • DE Sections = 123 (7.18% of total sections) • DE FTES: 488.29 (6.66% of total FTES)
Planning Spring 2009 • Faculty load policy approved by EPC (faculty shall teach at least 40% of their regular assignment on campus) • Certification of online course policy added (review of online shell every 5 years or when COR is updated) • Certification of online faculty policy added (every 5 years) - includes obtaining of "online pedagogy" certificate • DE Comprehensive Program Review submitted to and evaluated by EPC with recommendations
Planning Fall 2009 • CMS Task force recommends 2 CMS platforms - Moodle and Course Compass (Ecollege/mylabsplus) • Student worker assists Etudes CMS faculty in transition to Moodle CMS • DE presents status of online classes to EPC and recommends submission of a Substantive Change Proposal
Planning Spring 2010 • Update to ACCJC in Mid Term Accreditation report re status of Substantive Change • March 2010 DE and VPAA suspend accepting applications for new online classes to plan and prepare for Substantive Change Proposal • Super Sized Online Classes added - "Best Practices" in online classes at Mission dictates that online classes "not exceed" 50 students
Planning Fall 2010 • DE surveys Department Chairs on which classes (if any) they would support offering for an online AA degree • Math, Science, Political Science, Speech, PE, Child Development, all state their subjects must be campus based - or hybrid and not entirely online • Technology Committee recommends increase of student access including youtube, screencasts, online tutorials, eportfolios, student and faculty success center and website • Technology Master Plan (2010-2015), emphasizing Anytime, Anywhere and Always-on Technology. approved by College Council
Planning Spring 2011 • 30 Online classes reviewed and approved by DE Committee • Online pedagogy certificate required of all online faculty prior to teaching their Fall 2011 online class • All online classes reviewed by DE within last five (5) years in preparation for Substantive Change
Planning Summer 2011 • All online faculty now have online pedagogy certificate • FIRST DRAFT - Substantive Change (84 pages) • DRAFT - Distance Learning Guide for Faculty – including 30 pages of instructions on Assistive Access (i.e. how to make online materials ADA compliant) • DRAFT – new proposed DE Course Approval Form • DRAFT – new DE Course Approval procedures • Update of Program review to EPC • DRAFT – DE “Best Practices” • DRAFT - “Frequent Contact with Student” Policies
Planning Fall 2011 • Moodle usage – (fiscal year) $7300 - 200 classes (2/3rds of which are on campus/web-enhanced classes ) - 7000 students, about $1.00 per student • Annotated Shell Review Rubric approved • DL Addendum Form to COR - approved by DE and reviewed by Curriculum • DL New Course Approval Procedure – approved by DE and reviewed by Curriculum • PENULTIMATE DRAFT of Substantive Change submitted (102 pages) to VPAA, President, and EPC • 10/17/11 Powerpoint Presentation of Substantive Change to EPC • November – Powerpoint Presentation of Substantive Change to Academic Senate, College Council, and LACCD Student Success Committee • December – Approval of Substantive Change by EPC, Academic Senate, College Council, and Board of Trustees • January 2012 – Submit Substantive Change to ACCJC
New DL Course Approval Procedures • Step 1: Obtain DL Addendum Form to COR (DLAF/COR) –(available at Curriculum and DE websites) • Step 2: Complete CMS Certification and Online Pedagogy Certificate (Local Mission Policy – approved by EPC - June 2009 ) • Step 3: Complete DL Addendum Form to COR (consult with members of DL Committee for assistance) • Step 4: Obtain Department Chair approval • Step 5: Obtain Dean Approval • Step 6: Obtain Curriculum Approval • Step 7: Online Class uploaded to the selected CMS & Department Chair and Dean verify if course is “ready” to publish and deliver online (“shell review” step) • Step 8: Academic Affairs is notified
