Flavell John Flavell is said to be the “father of the field” He defines metacognition as embracing both knowledgeand skills: “The individual’s own awareness and considerationof his or her cognitive process and strategies” Skills include the ability to monitor and regulate strategies for learning, including planning, prioritising and monitoring, strategies which require personal involvement. (Flavell, 1976:232).
Vygotsky The adult controls or guides the child’s activity The adult and child share the problem solving functions The child takes initiative with the adult as guide or as corrector The adult gives control to the child Scaffolding refers to the gradual withdrawal of adult control and support. Children learn how to learn (Mind in Society, 1978)
