FORTH: A brief profile • FORTH is a semi-public Research Center. • The first three Institutes of FORTH were established in 1983. • Today, FORTH is one of the two largest Research Centers in Greece, having at the end of 2004 a personnel of 985 in its seven Institutes and an annual budget of ~ 35M€, which includes 5.1 M€ from sales of products and services. • Only 22% of the budget is granted from the State (Regular Budget), 14% comes from the private sector and 46% comes from competitive international and national grants and 18% as matching funds.
FORTH today • has been recognized internationally as a center performing high quality scientific and technological research. • supports University education and training • ~ 360 scholarships per year (253 PhD), Crete University Press: 278 book titles. • has been successful in exploiting the outcome of research • FORTHNET is the most successful spin-off company, of ~90 M€ stock market value. • has provided support to the regional and national economy and welfare: • HELP-FORWARD, an Innovation Relay Center together with the Federation of Greek Industries • Development of Science and Technology Parks • HYGEIA-net 3
