Geological History. By looking at rock outcrops in cliffs, road cuttings, building sites, quarries, river and stream banks geologists can build up a picture of the rocks that make up that area. (such as in the next slide) Information from wells is also useful.

  1. Geological History • By looking at rock outcrops in cliffs, road cuttings, building sites, quarries, river and stream banks geologists can build up a picture of the rocks that make up that area. (such as in the next slide) Information from wells is also useful.

Sedimentary rocks Igneous rocks Metamorphic rocks Smooth mudstone Gabbro intrusive Gneiss Siltstone Weathered Coal basalt lava and ash Mudstone (some fossils) Sandstone Limestone, some shell fragments Conglomerate (gravel & boulders with sand and mud infill) Write a history for the geological area shown on the left. Write it as a list of geological events, starting with the oldest. Start with the conglomerate layer.
