Animation, Audio, and Video Careers Presentation By Savannah King
Career One Animator
What is an Animator? Animators use computer programs and other techniques to develop images called frames. These frames are strung together to create a simulation of movement called an animation. This animation often tells a story or gives a message to its audience.
Expected Skill Sets • Artistic talent and technical skills • Attention to detail • Communication and the ability to tell a story • Works well with others • Flexibility • Computer literacy and familiarity with software (Maya, Autodesk, etc..) • Time Management skills
Technical Knowledge • Proficient in CGI software like Maya • Experience drawing digitally by hand • Experience with video editing software such as Premiere • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc..)

Contact local Art Studios or Media Agencies about potential workshops to help develop a portfolio.
Salary Low: $40K/yr High: $105K/yr Average: $74K/yr
Why I’m Interested As someone who loves drawing and working with computers, this would be a good combination of the two. I would utilize my art skills and my proficiency with computers at the same time. I can see myself being a 2D Animator who works with multiple teams to ensure our product is the very best it can be. I would use programs like Maya and Toon Harmony to create animated characters or assets for games and videos.
Job Availability and Growth There are over seventy-three thousand jobs available in the animation industry and that number is said to grow by over six thousand in the next few years. This occupation is said to grow tremendously because of the increase in digital media and the use of technology in everyday life.
My Advice I would tell someone interested in this career to invest a lot of time in their art skills and make sure that they do everything they can to get experience. Whether it is attending workshops or doing drawing exercises like storyboarding their favorite animated film.
Career Two Game and Audio Design Engineer
What is a Game and Audio Design Engineer? Audio Engineers that work in the game design industry are responsible for making the sound effects, ambient sound, and sometimes the background music for the video game. This can require knowing the game engine that is being used intimately as well as having some programming experience.
Expected Skill Sets • Experience with audio editing equipment • Some experience with programming • Communication skills • A sense of rhythm • Time management
Technical Knowledge • Proficient in audio editing software • Experience with Wwise and implementing audio in a gaming atmosphere • Programming experience in languages like C++, C, and C Sharp • Familiarity with game engines like Unreal 3 and Unreal 4
Education Audio Engineers are recommended to have a degree in Audio Engineering or a related field. It is also recommended that they have experience with audio editing software so taking tutorials on various programs or becoming proficient in one is a good start.
Salary Low: $30K/yr High: $150K/yr Average: $70K/yr
Why I’m Interested This career would be good for me because I already enjoy Game Development and working on the audio for games would be an interesting way for me to develop new skills. I can see myself working for a mid-level Game Development company developing the sound for an upcoming game. I would work with the Senior Sound Designer to create music and sound effects that give the proper tone to the scene.
Job Availability and Growth There are not many jobs available for this position and there is only predicted to be a small amount of growth in the next few years.
My Advice I would tell someone looking to go into this field that they should know it isn’t a huge money maker. People are audio engineers because they have a passion for it, not because it’s a get rich quick job.

What is a Cinematographer? A cinematographer or Director of Photography is responsible for a majority of the visual elements of the film. Education A Bachelor’s degree in Film or Cinematography as well as experience on film sets is recommended.
Salary Low: $30K/yr High: $113K/yr Average: $54K/yr
Why I’m Interested As someone who has experience in theatre and a passion for photography, I would love this job. The opportunity to operate a large cinema camera would be amazing the high energy on a set is unparalleled. I can see myself collaborating with the different departments on set to make sure our production is the very best it can be.
Job Availability and Growth There are over sixty thousand jobs available in this market and it is expected to grow faster than most while maintaining its status as a highly competitive market.
My Advice I would give someone pursuing this career the advice to spend as much time as possible on the set of photoshoots or films to gain familiarity with the atmosphere.
