Suribachi, the 54in. by 28in. flag was thought too small to be seen from the beach and was replaced by a larger flag. The second flag raising was captured by Associated Press photographer, Joe Rosenthal. His photograph would become one of the war’s most iconic images. University of North Texas Libraries
