10. OUR WISH We hope that each of you considers a career in EMS, successfully completes our program, earns your EMS license, and goes on to become a great EMS provider! - The entire CNM EMS faculty and staff

11. CAREER PROFILE • 4 levels of EMS Provider • First Responder (EMR) • EMT-Basic (EMT-B) • Advanced EMT (EMT-I) • Paramedic

12. FIRST RESPONDER • One (1) semester program • Designed for students not wishing to pursue advanced training in EMS • Typically taken by students acting as “first responders” in an industrial or volunteer setting • NOT a pre- or corequisite for any other level of EMS training at CNM

14. Students Interested in EMT-Basic • Must choose one of four certificate or degree pathways which lead to gainful employment Prospective EMT-Basic Student EMT-I Cert Paramedic AAS Fire Science AAS Pre-Allied Health, Pre-Paramedic AA

15. EMT-BASIC • Offered as a “learning community” • Entry-level courses for pursuing a career in EMS • This is a pre-requisite to the paramedic program and the Advanced EMT course

17. Advanced EMT • Two (2) semester program • Offered as a “learning community” • First Term: • EMS 1412 • EMS1493 • Second Term : • EMS1890

18. Advanced EMT • May be taken by EMTs wishing to gain additional medical skills, but not necessarily wishing to pursue a paramedic license • May also provide additional training prior to acceptance into the paramedic program • Recommended pre-requisite to the paramedic program

19. Advanced EMT • Departmental Approval until open registration date • Early registration given by departmental approval to people with current New Mexico EMT-Basic license • Open registration date, departmental approval will be lifted • Contact EMT-I Coordinator

20. PARAMEDIC • Associate of Applied Science Degree • 1 semester arts & science (15 credit hours) • 3 semesters EMS coursework (47 credit hours) • Provides the highest level of care in the prehospital setting and are currently in high demand • Offers the greatest level of career stability, highest income earning potential, and the greatest opportunity for career advancement

21. Paramedic • Must apply through the Coordinated Program Entry Office. • New Cohorts begin Summer and Fall only. In Spring 2015 , there will be an entry every term.

22. Paramedic • Min requirements • 2.5 GPA • Current New Mexico EMT-Basic or Intermediate License • Scoring criteria • Point based (33 points possible) • Courses completed, essays, experience, license level

CAREER PROFILE • Be prepared for: • working both indoors and out • all types of weather • working days, nights, weekends, and holidays • being on call for extended periods (24 – 48 hrs) • physically strenuous work which can be stressful, sometimes involving life-or-death situations and suffering patients

29. CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS • Ability to make the time commitment • Good study habits • Support services at CNM to help if needed • Mature and has good people skills • Has employer support, works part-time, or not at all • Supportive friends and family

30. FINAL THOUGHTS We will walk with you every step of the journey, but we will not carry you. We are looking for and preparing students who can lift their end of the gurney! Some day you may be the caregiver of our loved ones!
