Paul Herman Seiler • Born November 1st, 1945 in Algona IA • Bishop Garrigan Class of 1963 • Played football for the University of Notre Dame from 1964-1966 • He was the 12th pick in the first round of the 1967 NFL Draft • He was selected in front of a total of six future pro football Hall of Famers including Alan Page and Gene Upshaw
Paul began drawing eyes from coaches during his high school playing days at Bishop Garrigan. He was a 6’4” 258lbs lineman. The size of what is considered big for lineman has increased exponentially over the years.
Seiler’s college football career got off to a slow start. He did not earn a letter until his senior season, but he took full advantage of his playing time and became an All- American, leading to an NFL career.
Paul did not earn a letter in his sophomore and junior seasons despite being a second stringer. When Bob Meeker, a starting offensive lineman for the Irish, graduated, Seiler slipped right into the left tackle slot.
Seiler’s performance was far better than you would expect from a guy who had spent most of his career as a second stringer Paul with the California Sun in 1975
Paul Seiler was fortunate enough his senior year to help lead Notre Dame to win the 1966 National Championship #71 Paul Seiler
In the 1967 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected Paul as the 12th overall pick in the 1st round. This coming before 6 future Hall of Famers including Alan Page, Gene Upshaw, Lem Barney, Willie Lanier, Rayfield Wright, and Ken Houston. Other notables picked before Paul, were Steve Spurrier, Bob Griese, and Floyd Little
Seiler played in just two games in his rookie season for the Jets, but a leg injury kept him off the field. • Paul skipped the 1968 season to serve his country in the military. • He returned for the ’69 season and played in 11 games for the Jets.
After an offseason leg surgery, the Jets released Seiler before the 1970 season. • He later joined the Oakland Raiders and played three seasons with them(1971-1973) • In those three seasons, Paul Seiler played in thirty-nine games. • He was apart of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970
After the ’73 season, Paul left the NFL and joined the Southern California Sun, a WFL (World Football League) team. • He played two seasons for the Sun, appearing in a total of twenty games. • This would be the last team he would play for, ending his 7 year career with three different teams. Playing in a total of 59 professional football games. Paul with the California Sun in 1975
