  2. Welcome • On behalf of the Residents and Staff of the Aboriginal Residency Training Site, we welcome you • We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that we are on Coast Salish Territory, and to acknowledge the elders that are present today

  8. What are we about? • Our mission: • to improve the health of Aboriginal people by training physicians sensitive to and empowered with skills and knowledge of Aboriginal health issues • Building relationships to support vibrant, healthy, Aboriginal children, families and communities

  9. What are we about? • Fostering healthy relationships • Incorporating traditional teachings and ceremony into our various academic activities • Need to have a desire to work with the Aboriginal population • Aboriginal ancestry not required

  11. Where are we? • Coast Salish Territory • Cowichan Valley - 1 resident • Victoria - 1 resident • Vancouver - 1 resident • Ladysmith- 1 resident

  12. Cowichan(catchment area pop. 80,000) • Cowichan District Hospital with some rotations in Victoria • Shared academic time with the Victoria site • Excellent staff, few other learners meaning lots of hands on experience

Sample Curriculum - Vancouver FFM: Foundations of Family Medicine – Behavioral Medicine FIR: maternity ward at BCWH focusing on women with addictions Hor: horizontal family medicine, including peds, psychiatry, maternity, one-week fly-ins with a family doc to rural indigenous communities PGY-2: includes surgery and palliative care opportunities, 2 months rural, as well as plenty of elective time to tailor your residency experience
