The works of the flesh: (part 1)Perverted physical intimacy SCRIPTURE READING: I Peter 4:1-6
REVIEW • The place of attack by the sin nature is the soul • I Pet 2:11 • “Lusts of the flesh never appeal to the reason (spirit) and the consequences are not considered” H.L. Schafer • Gal 5:19-21 lists 17 work-lusts of the flesh (sin nature) which either describe the start or the conclusion of an unrighteous act
Introduction • Physical intimacy has been designed by God for: • Procreation • A means of showing love and affection • cf Heb 13:4
Adultery • Definition: the act of physical intimacy outside the marriage bond (Lk 16:18) • The ‘grass is greener’ syndrome • Adultery is a part of the larger term ‘fornication’ but is emphasized individually because of the individual choice and societal importance of the marriage and family unit
Fornication • Definition: illicit physical intimacy, including: • Adultery and Incest • I Cor 5:1 • Intimacy with a prostitute • I Cor 6:13-15 • Homosexuality (and implied beastiality) • Jude 7
Uncleanness • Definition: obsessive retention in the mind’s eye of thoughts of perverted physical intimacy • Retained obsessive thoughts are a subset of all unrighteous lusts and passions • cf I Thess 4:3-7
Lasciviousness • Definition: literally “without restraint” Outrageous lewd behavior • Condition of Sodom • II Pet 2:7 • The lifestyle of the Gentiles (nations) • Eph 4:17-20 • Some believers have experienced lasciviousness in their pre-salvation years • I Pet 4:1-3
Lasciviousness (continued) • Definition: literally “without restraint” Outrageous lewd behavior • Some believers may yet to succumb to the lust of lasciviousness • II Cor 12:20-21 • God’s grace has been made a (false) pretext for lasciviousness by some • Jude 4
CONCLUSION God’s ONLY way of escape from unrighteous thoughts of physical intimacy that can lead to unrighteous acts of physical intimacy: Rom 6:11 “…count it true that you are dead to the sin nature, but alive to God” Col 3:1-2,5 “If you then be risen with Christ… set your (deep) reflective thinking on things above…” James 1:2 “count it all joy when you fall into various temptations”
