Always Ensure Your Telescopic Sight Is Fitted Properly To Your Firearm Hunters and competition shooters often look forward to their outings for days, weeks or months. Therefore it can be disappointing when things go wrong when, for example, you keep on missing target, keep on leaving without that trophy animal you have been dreaming about the whole year. Of course, much of this frustration can be avoided by making sure you hone your shooting skills properly, by acquiring a good firearm – and having a good telescopic sight attached to your firearm. Some firearms are sold with a good sight attached to them, but many hunters and shooters prefer to buy a sight separately from the firearm they acquire from the gunsmith – or a trusted, well-recommended website. Buying firearms – and therefore telescopic sights to be mounted op top –from online sources is no longer strange. It has become, for many, their preferred option. What the hunter and shooter must do is establish they deal with a knowledgeable, experienced gunsmith or online service. When looking at the most appropriate telescopic sight for your rifle, you will also have to establish how to mount it on your firearm. To do this is the preference of many a hunter and shooter; therefore they make sure they have the system which allows them to. This mounting, or scope mount system, consists of a base and accompanying rings, screws and small tools. Nothing more than that, and following the most basic of instructions. These are bought from a gunsmith – or a good website. The base is attached directly to the firearm and has to be sturdy/steady enough for the rings and scope itself to be supported. There are choices of either a 1- or 2-piece base and rings and are bought according to your preference. It must be remembered that certain bases and rings fit certain firearms – and not necessarily another. Therefore, make sure your scope mount system is the one for your specific rifle. Good websites, for example, ensure they offer good choices for their customers, and they will also make sure you have the information concerning the system you need for your rifle or another firearm whether yours is a brand such as, say, Ruger, Mossberg, Browning or Tikka. Once you have the correct base and rings, you will secure these to your firearm by positioning them over the drilled holes of the firearm and attaching them with the small screws provided. It should be done properly to ensure the scope does not move since that will cause failure on the shooter’s part as they will miss the target. Bases come with
a quick-release lever too so that the shooter can switch between scopes as well if they so wish. Then there is a different type of base still, the so-called Weaver-style or Picatinny, which is a base that is part of the receiver, and not a separately bought base. They are the so-called “top rails” option, which is indeed the base, and not separate like the rings. They will use rings designed specifically for them. Once again: when you acquire your scope mount system, be sure that you use the correct base and rings for your firearm, or rings only if the base is already an integral part of your firearm. Once you have made sure your base and rings (or rings only where the base is already part for the firearm) fit the firearm (rifle, gun or pistol), go ahead and attach these with the screws provided for this purpose. A good gunsmith or online provider will lead you through the process, which is easy to understand and execute. Just make sure to follow instructions from the manufacturer or online service provider. With a properly tightened and fitted scope attached to your rifle, you are ready for the hunt, or the competition.
