Accelerated Reader • With over 100,000 titles to choose from, students can find a variety of titles within their reading range that provide challenge, not frustration. • Quizzes give students immediate feedback on how well they comprehended the text. • AR points act as a gauge to indicate how close they are to reaching their reading goal. Puts Readers on the Right Track
Accelerated Reader • Flexibility: Students read at their own pace. • Choice: Students have a variety of genres within their reading range to choose from. • Individual Success: Students help set their own reading goals. • Low Stress: No dictated number of pages or time constraints. • Voluntary: Participation in AR is not required. Students are in the Driver’s Seat
Accelerated Reader Students can read books three different ways: • To the child • With guidance • Independently Read in Several Gears: TWI
Accelerated Reader • AR quizzes provide teachers a built-in accountability system for their Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) programs. • Individual and class reports are easy to read and provide up-to-date progress information. • Easy as 1,2,3: Students read a book, take a quiz, and get information immediately. Accelerated Reader • In his book, Punished by Rewards, Alfie Kohn states that rewards can discourage desired behaviors and warns that the same can happen with reading incentive programs. • The strength of the AR program is not in linking earned point goals to an extrinsic reward, but rather to its intrinsic elements: student choice, immediate feedback, access to a variety of books within that child’s reading range, the opportunity to attain goals and be recognized for this achievement. Accelerated Reader • Acknowledge students who have reached their reading goals at school assemblies. • Avoid prizes and other extrinsic rewards. • Give AR certificates in recognition of their achievement. Hear the Roar of Recognition!
Accelerated Reader • AR is a reading incentive, not a reading program. • AR represents only a part of a balanced reading program and should enhance, not replace it. • Diverse reading experiences that foster deeper level thinking and are based on quality literature and student interest should help drive a balanced reading program.
