4. History of the Museum The history of the Museum is an unusual one. It was the center of Paris on the banks of the Seine opposite the Tuleries Garden It was a railway station that was called Gare D’Orsay It was built for the Universal Exibition of 1900 by Lucien Magne, Émile Bénard and Victor Laloux

5. History of the Museum (Cont.) By 1939 the short platforms could not fit the long trains that came to be used for the mainline services. After 1939 it was used for suburban services and part was a mailing center in world war 2. After that it was used for many films such as Kafka’s The Trial In 1977 the Government decided to turn it into a museum

6. General Information Musée d’Orsay is open from 9.30 am to 6 pm daily except on Mondays, May 1st, January 1st and December 25th. There are late nights on Thursdays where it stays open till 9.45 pm. The tickets are last sold at 5 pm except on Thursdays where they are last sold at 9pm. Group visits have to be prebooked. The full rate to get in is €9 for 18 to 30 year old. Everyone after 4.15 pm, and everyone on Thursday evenings after 6 pm pay €7. Under 18 year olds and everyone on the first Sunday of the month pay for free. Also you can buy a pass to go to the Orsay and the Rodin for €12.

7. Restaurants and more There is a bookshop and a museum store which are open from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm and on Thursdays till 9.30 pm. In the restaurant lunch is from 11.45 am to 2.30 pm, the tea room is open from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm except Thursdays, and dinner is Thursdays only from 7 pm to 9.30 pm. There is also a café called Café des Hauteurs. This is open from 10.30 am to 5 pm and on Thursdays till 9.

8. Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh was born March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert and died July 29, 1890. He’s a dutch painter and created more than 2,000 works of art. Most of his best works of art were created in his last two years of his life during which he cut off his ear following a breakdown from his friendship with Paul Gaughin. Afterward he suffered from mental illness which led to his suicide.

9. The Starry Night This painting was made by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 using Oil on canvas. This painting shows the view outside his sanitarium room window at night though he painted it from his memory during the day. In the lower corner is the pen drawing of this painting.

10. Edgar Degas Degas was born July 19, 1834 in Paris, France and died September 27, 1917 at the age of 83 in Paris, France. He did painting, sculpting and drawing and he is an impressionist. He is especially identified by the subject of dance. His portraits are considered among the finest in the history of art.

12. Picasso Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso was born October 25, 1881 in Málaga, Spain and died April 8, 1973 at 91 in Mougins, France. He used cubism to do his paintings.

13. The weeping woman. This painting was done in 1937 with Oil on canvas. It is focused on a woman crying.
