  1. Neuroscience supports the need for Quality Physical Education Jean Blaydes Action Based Learning www.actionbasedlearning.com

  2. The Benefits of Exercise Exercise boostsbrain function Exercise improvescognition Exercise strengthens memory Exercise prepares the brain to learn Exercise regulates behavior Exercise weakens the ill effects of poverty Exercise can positively change the brain

  3. Movement Physical Activity Exercise

  4. ExerciseGrowsBrain Cells www.actionbasedlearning.com

  5. Embodied Cognition Using gestures, actions and motions to understand concepts Movement anchors learning through our senses to increase retention and retrieval of memory

  6. Emotional Punctuation Celebrations to build MINDSET www.actionbasedlearning.com

  7. About 85% of students prefer to process KINESTHETICALLY www.actionbasedlearning.com

  8. PE builds the Framework for Learning How do we learn?

  9. Neuron

  10. Neurons are thinking cells Neuron Axon Myelin Synapse Dendrites Secondary dendritic branching www.actionbasedlearning.com

  11. This is your BRAIN… • Your brain is about the size of 2 fists put together • Information flows back and forth, side to side and up and down • Corpus Callosum • Motor Cortex • Three basic motormovements: • Crawling to Walking • Jumping • Rolling www.actionbasedlearning.com

  12. Cerebellular Training The cerebellum and the Pre frontal Cortex are connected. The PFC controls memory, language, emotions, social skills, and attention. If the cerebellum is off, then cognitive function suffers. Physical patterns and skills challenge the cerebellum and it grows quicker. Cerebellular exercises that cross the midline enlist more parts of the brain for well developed attention systems. Budde 2008

  13. What makes us MOVE is also what makes us THINK

  14. Exercise benefits the BRAIN first Exercise changes the brain at a MOLECULAR LEVEL • Brain fuel is oxygen and glucose • Neurogenesis • Secondary dendritic branching • Neurotransmitters • BDNF www.actionbasedlearning.com

  15. Exercise makes you Smarter • BDNF floods the brain • Aids mental sharpness and the ability to learn and memorize • BDNF increase could alleviate the symptoms of ADHD Dartmouth Michaels Hopkins 5/2012 www.actionbasedlearning.com

  16. EXERCISE is encoded in our genes www.actionbasedlearning.com

  17. Play • Play is found in every species • The more intelligent the species the more play is involved Stuart Brown The Science of Play www.actionbasedlearning.com

  18. The CHAIR is the least effective environment for LEARNING!

  19. John Medina, author of Brain Rules says, "The human brain appears to have been designed to solve problems related to surviving in an outdoor setting in unstable meteorological conditions and to do so in near constant motion. So...if you wanted to design a learning environment that was directly opposed to what the brain is naturally good at doing ~ you'd design a frickin’classroom!”

  20. Average composite of 20 students brains taking the same test BRAIN AFTER SITTING QUIETLY BRAIN AFTER 20 MINUTE WALK Research/scan compliments of Dr. Chuck Hillman University of Illinois
