  1. Organic Reactions Investigation: Amides AnkitaBaruah and Joanna VanCooten

  2. Types of Reactions Note: Tertiary Amines cannot undergo condensation reactions.

  3. Condensation Carboxylic acid + ammonia or primary/secondary amine  amide + water Reactants Products

  4. Hydrolysis amide + water  Carboxylic acid + ammonia or primary/secondary amine Reactants Products

  5. Acid Hydrolysis H+ H+ Amide + water + acid  carboxylic acid + ammonium salt H+ H+ Reactants Catalyst H+ Products H+

  6. Base Hydrolysis OH- Amide + base  salt of carboxylic acid + amine / ammonia OH- OH- OH- OH- Catalyst Reactant Products OH-

  7. Use of Amides in Industry

  8. Environmental Impacts • Acrylamide is present in low levels in drinking water. Increased exposure may cause damage to nervous system. • Amides may also be used in herbicides, such as polyacrylamide, which may be potentially harmful to crops. • Some amides, such as Nylon, are non-biodegradable • Kevlar bulletproof vests help to save lives around the world yet this product is non-biodegradable and simply ends up in a land fill

  9. Summary of Reactions

  10. Test Questions • How are amides formed? • What are the products of acid hydrolysis? • What are the products of base hydrolysis? • What is one of the industrial uses of amides? • What is one of the environmental effects of amides? • Draw the products of the following reactions:
