  1. The use of appropriate fluoride treatments including water fluoridation is a cost-effective and minimally invasive way of preventing and controlling dental cavities. The dental health benefits of fluoride have been shown in numerous studies. The benefits are in proportion to the length of time an individual received fluoride.

  2. Fluoride in the form of a gel, foam, spray, or solution is applied to strengthen the enamel tissues of the teeth to help reduce decay of erupted and newly erupting teeth.

  3. Topical fluoride is applied to clean teeth once or twice a year in the dental office. Using this method, cavities can be reduced by 40 to 50 percent.

  4. Fluoride treatment reduces the number of decayed, missing and filled teeth in children and adults.
