Ergonomics Summary • What is Ergonomics? • Ergonomics in the Workplace • Human Errors • Fit for Human Use • The Information Age • Resources
What is Ergonomics? • Ergonomics or human factors is concerned about the fit between people and the things they do, the objects they use, the environments they work, and travel.
Ergonomics in the Workplace GOALS • To design jobs to fit people • Take into account size, strength and ability of a range of users • Design tasks, workplace and tools to fit the users Benefits • Efficiency, quality and job satisfaction
Human Errors • Human error can be catastrophic in some industries (e.g. nuclear, chemical, heavy industrial, air traffic control). • Many “human errors” caused by poor design of equipment or work environment. Ergonomics professionals must design tasks, equipment and environment to minimize: • Information overload • Misreading of displays • Operating wrong controls
Fit for Human Use • Products, simple and complex can be a nightmare to use if not designed properly. • Products that are made for a particular person don’t have this problem – they are made to suit them. • Designers of products made for use by many people including young, old and the disabled: • Must take a user-centered approach. • By observing users, talking to users, testing with users.
The Information Age • Much of today’s ergonomics research is focused on improving the ways we access and use information. • For example: • Design of signs, instructions and symbols. • Office / Computer workstation design. • Software user interface or human-computer interface design. • We will focus on the last two in this course.
