Step 1 Identify the Message What is your purpose? • Call to action • Inform • Persuade; build support • Create an image • Set expectations • Incite emotion
Oktoberfest: A Case Study Purpose: To sell tickets to people who will contribute $ to the library (and enjoy it!)
Oktoberfest: A Case Study Message: Join us at Oktoberfest, EWU Libraries’ annual fundraiser dinner and auction. All proceeds benefit the EWU Libraries Collection Endowment Fund for the purchase of books and journals.
Step 4 Adapt the Message to the Audience(s) Wanted: Rockin’ Donations for OktoberfestLast year EWU Libraries raised nearly $35,000 (net), thanks in large part to the generous gift baskets and other donations from EWU departments & Calling all daddy-Os and dollies! Join us at Roktoberfest, Rock in’ the Library, EWU Libraries’ annual fundraiser dinner and auction. Dinner includes classic American diner fare—complete with car hops on roller skates—provided by

Step 6 Put the Plan into Action • Assign responsibilities • Get permission as needed • Marketing & Communications Office • Get help if it’s available • Graphics • PR or media specialist • Editor/proofreader
Step 7 Assess the Results • Poll attendees • Word of mouth • Brief survey • Surveymonkey link • Debriefing meeting • What worked? What didn’t • Adjust plan for next year
