  2. 1) What role did Neo-Conservatives play in bringing about the failure of Détente? Carter’s inexperience as President led to him relying on advisors- Brzezinski adopted a hard-line approach to communism.

  3. 2) What role did the Third World play in the end of Détente? Soviet Union became increasingly involved there, which neo-conservatives used as evidence of continuing Soviet ambitions to spread Communism. Carter supplied arms to anti-communist groups as a result.

  4. 3) What other reasons were there for Détente coming to an end? (4) • Soviet violations of human rights agreements reached in Helsinki • Critics at home put increasing pressure on both governments • Increasingly difficult to negotiate with Soviet Union due to Brezhnev’s failing health • Growing American impotence in foreign affairs led to calls for a firmer stance against aggressors.

  6. 5) What were the causes of the “spark”? Rise of Muslim Fundamentalism scared the USSR New government of Iran were violently anti-American- and US oil assets were under threat.

(5) • US language condemned the Soviet action • SALT II negotiations ended, and trade contracts were cancelled • US arms spending increased • USA’s more hard-line approach was supported by Margaret Thatcher. • US Presidential election saw Carter removed and replaced by hard-line anti-communist Ronald Reagan.
