  2. Une femme bohémien • Typiquement, elles sont du campagne de France • Elles sont venues à Paris pour le travail mais elles ont découvert la Bohémianisme • Elles aiment l’idée d’ égalité avec les homme bohémien La Grisette

  3. Le rôle de la Grisette • Elles avaient les amants bourgeois et bohémien • Pour les homme bourgeois les grisettes étaient un fantasme romantique • Pour les hommes bohémien – elles étaient la muse et inspiration • (La Bohémienne – Renoir) 

  4. Les grisettes sont rejeté les règles de société et une vie traditionnel • Sans la grisette, la bohème ne serait pas un sous-culture complète

Les similarités? • Quelle est votre réaction àdes attitudes de Mimi et Musette dans Chapitre 6 et 14? • Quelle est votre opinion de la grisette?   7. The Avantgarde and Bohemia • Avantgarde: people/worksthat are experimental or innovative in respect to art, culture, and politics. • Originated in the same time and place – Paris in the 1820s • They are not coincident, the avantgarde could not exist without bohemia

  8. Bohemians have to ability to discover new, surprising and interesting ways of living • Confront or avoid authority • Bohemia is more than a counterculture • Bohemians “discovered” culture

Theatricalized Authenticity • Bohemians are rebellions on display (incapable of minding the line between private and public) • Loud and gaudy, can be found on street corners • Murger describes them as those who have “given evidencr to the public of their existence” • Preformers in the sense that they are imitating gypsies

  11. Exoticism • Exoticism = adopting what is exotic or foreign • Adopted Eastern European and Indian styles • Rich quality of sexual and cultural “otherness”

  12. Gypsies • The original bohemian • The French “bohemians” were inspired by gypsies • Gypsies are known for “living virtuously and authentically apart from the mainstream.” • They mimic the way gypsies challenge authority through fashion, sex and cuisine and creative expression
