  1. Honors: Thursday, April 3rd • What does this image tell you about Andrew Carnegie? Does it make him look like a robber baron or a captain of industry? Why?

  2. Continue working on Reading Analysis Worksheet #3 • Continue to analyze the document and fill out the chart. If you have finished, read over the rubric on the back and make sure that you have thoroughly answered every question. • Once you finish, you may work on your journal rough draft or revise Reading Analysis worksheets 1 and 2.

  3. CP: Thursday, April 3rd • Pull out the documents that we read yesterday. Now think about the question “Was Andrew Carnegie a Hero?” What do you think is the answer to this question? Give 2-3 reasons why.

  4. CP: Document Based Question • Your task: Based on the documents you read yesterday, you will answer the question “Was Andrew Carnegie a Hero?”

  5. CP: STEP 1 • Create a thesis statement.Write a clear statement that explains what your argument is and your reasoning • HINT: Your reasoning should be a preview of your three body paragraphs. • Example: Andrew Carnegie was a hero because he introduced innovative business practices, treated his workers fairly, and donated a lot of money to charity. • My 3 pieces of reasoning correspond to my body paragraphs: Business Practices, Relations with Labor, and Philanthropy

  6. CP: STEP 2 • Work on Body Paragraph 1: Business Practices • Start with a “baby thesis” • Include 2-3 pieces of evidence from the documents. • Look back to your notes to see which documents belong in the “Business Practices” bucket

  7. CP: STEPS 3 AND 4 • Repeat Step 2 for the next two body paragraphs, which cover Relations with Labor and Philanthropy.

  13. Cornelius Vanderbilt • Built his fortune on railroads and shipping • New York Central and Hudson River RR: one of America’s first major corporations • Built a university and donated to churches; most of his fortune was inherited by his family– and they went crazy spending it!
