Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn Vocabulary
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Plane: One of the basic undefined terms of geometry. A plane goes on forever in all directions (in two-dimensions) and is "flat" (i.e., it has no thickness).
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Line Segment: The part of a line between two points on the line. Sometimes referred to as a segment.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Line: A line has no thickness but its length goes on forever in two directions.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Point: A point has no length, width, or thickness, and we often use a dot to represent it.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Endpoint: The point at an end of a line segment or ray.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Intersection: The point at which two or more lines, rays, or line segments meet or cross.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Ray: A ray begins at a point and goes on forever in one direction.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Angle: Region between two rays or the amount of rotation about a fixed point.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Parallel Lines: Two lines that lie in the same plane and they do not intersect (cross) and would not ever cross if they were extended (railroad tracks).
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Perpendicular Lines: Two lines, rays or line segments that meet or cross at a right angle.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Corresponding Angles: Angles that have the same relative positions in geometric figures.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Corresponding Sides: Sides that have the same relative positions in geometric figures.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Congruent: Having the same size, shape and measure.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Transformation: The mapping, or movement, of all the points of a figure in a plane according to a common operation.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Translation: A transformation that "slides" each point of a figure the same distance in the same direction.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Reflection: A transformation that "flips" a figure over a mirror or reflection line.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Reflection Line: A line that acts as a mirror in the form of a perpendicular bisector so that corresponding points are the same distance from the mirror.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Rotation: A transformation that turns a figure about a fixed point at a given angle and a given direction.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Bisector of a line: the straight line or ray that divides a line segment or angle into two congruent segments.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Angle of Rotation: The number of degrees that a figure is rotated about a fixed point.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Coincide: To occupy the same position in space; correspond exactly or be identical.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Skew: Lines not in a plane that don’t meet.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Right Angle: An angle that measures 90°.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Obtuse Angle: An angle that measures more than 90° but less than 180 °.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Acute Angle: An angle that measures less than 90°.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Vertex: a point at which two or more sides or edges of a geometric figure meet.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Dilation: a change in the size of an object without changing the shape.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Similar: Figures that have the same shape.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Scale factor: the ratio of the lengths of corresponding sides in similar figures.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Supplementary angles – Two angles whose measures, when added together, equal 180 degrees.
Unit 4 – Flip, Slide & Turn - Vocabulary Complementary angles – Two angles whose measures, when added together, equal 90 degrees.
