DISCOVER - Background • DISCOVER is a collaboration between RSS,NASA/MSFC and UAH/ITSC researchers. The UAH/ITSC research group is also affiliated with the GHRC. • DISCOVER’s core mission: To provide highly accurate, long-term climate data records and near-real-time ocean products for Earth research applications. • UAH/ITSC provides information technology for DISCOVER, including improved online services for open data access and visualization. • GHRC will host DISCOVER data sets in formats unavailable from RSS and provide data discovery and metadata exploration.
MEaSUREs Project Data Center Contact • Because UAH/ITSC* is the IT partner in the DISCOVER project, contact has been ongoing since the beginning of MEaSUREs funding. • Through DISCOVER, metadata for selected datasets at RSS are already harvested into the GHRC catalog • Discussions between RSS and GHRC staff about hosting and mirroring DISCOVER datasets at GHRC began earlier this year. *UAH/ITSC also manages GHRC in collaboration with NASA/MSFC.
Current Products at GHRC that are Similar to MEaSUREs Products • GHRC has many passive microwave datasets, some already provided by RSS (AMSU-A, TMI) or developed in concert with RSS (SSM/I). These GHRC datasets are generally in HDF-EOS. • Transition / mirroring of datasets from RSS to GHRC is made easier by earlier / ongoing DISCOVER work.
Data Formats • All RSS datasets are provided in RSS simple binary format • Most GHRC passive microwave datasets are in HDF-EOS • Work is underway to provide netCDF translations of all DISCOVER datasets • To be archived in netCDF at GHRC • RSS will also offer on-demand translation of some datasets
Metadata Standards • DISCOVER data cataloged at the GHRC meet current EOSDIS metadata requirements, and are published in ECHO and GCMD. • netCDF versions of DISCOVER data are employing CF-compliant metadata descriptions. • GHRC is participating in NASA ES ISO 19115 study.
Data Access Services • Data Discovery • HyDRO (GHRC local search tool) • OpenSearch • ECHO and GCMD • Data Ordering • Orders accepted from HyDRO and ECHO • Managed by Data Order Tracking and Packer services • Data Access • All DISCOVER data online at RSS (binary format), to be mirrored at GHRC (in netCDF format) • Implementing OPeNDAP at both RSS and GHRC repositories
Data Provenance • All DISCOVER data products are generated at RSS, using consistent production rules for all files in a given version of a dataset. • GHRC needs to make sure the RSS algorithm version number is contained in netCDF annotations as well as in catalog metadata.
Formal Agreements • No formal data archive agreement currently exists between RSS and the GHRC. • We have been working together for many years under previous NASA funding, Pathfinder, REASoN and now MEaSUREs funding.
