The Bestiary • The Medieval Bestiary is a collection of creatures, real and imaginary, that the people in that time would have known of. • The Entries usually included a illustration of the creature, followed by its description, and a christian story or moral.
The Illustrations The illustrations in the Bestiaries were often incorrect because, even if the creature was real it was unlikely the illustrator had actually seen it. For example, this image is supposed to be of a whale, but instead looks more to be a gigantic fish.
The Stories Most of the stories in the Bestiary are incorrect. For example, the story for the bear says: The bear cubs are born unformed, as a limbless, eyeless blob. They must be licked into shape by their mother … weird huh? That is where the expression: “to lick into shape” comes from. Also, it’s totally incorrect.
The Creatures Most of the creatures in the bestiaries were actual animals, but some of the more mythological creatures are pretty cool. Take this one for example, its a Sea-Pig, a cross between a fish and a pig … pretty cool, right?
Conclusion The Medieval Bestiary is a collection of creatures that were prominent stories and such during the medieval times. It is a very interesting topic to research. I would suggest that you read up on it as well. It has been a pleasure doing this presentation for you, and I hope you enjoyed it, and, maybe you learned something.
