Top Secret • An unidentified object HAS been recovered and taken to the naval base for further investigation. • There were reports of alien remains, but so far it has not been possible to discover if there was life on board the object. • Scientists at HMNB Devonport have been unable to complete some of the analysis tasks due to lack of staff. Some of them were too scared! • You have been asked to help investigate the possibility that there was life on board and that it was alien. Top Secret
Tasks Top Secret • Investigate human DNA – the basic instructions for human life found in every cell. Compare this to samples taken from the scene. • Investigate compounds found at the scene to see if they contain elements found on Earth or unknown elements that could only come from outer space • Investigate substances found at the scene to see if they contain nutrients capable of supporting life. • Reconstruct a model of the aircraft/object at the scene and see if you can work out how it would fly.
Task 2 – Investigating the Alien • A sample, possibly alien blood has been taken from the scene. • Carry out an investigation to see if it contains DNA and compare it to the human DNA you have already seen • Test the substance to see what pH it is – is it the same as human blood? • Test the substance to see if there is any glucose. Living things need glucose for respiration
DNA Extraction • Make your DNA extraction solution: Take 100ml of water. Stir in 3g of salt. Add 10ml of detergent and stir slowly. • Add a sample of the alien substance and stir slowly. • Leave in the water bath for 15 minutes (carry out the other tests while you are waiting • Gently pour the ice cold methanol onto the mixture to make a layer. • Look at the layers and see if you can identify any DNA
Blood Test • Human blood (and most mammals) has a pH of around 7.5 • Test the alien substance with the universal indicator to see what the pH is.
Sugar Test • All living things on Earth need glucose and oxygen for respiration • If the alien substance is from a living thing it might contain sugar . • Take a sample of the alien goo and put it in a test tube. • Add the Benedicts solution and shake thoroughly. • Leave in the water bath for 5-10 minutes. If it goes orange/green then there is sugar present
