WHY DO WE NEED IT? • 20% of diamonds are used for jewelry • 80% are used for cutting tools, polishing hard metals, phonograph, videodiscs, and laboratory instruments.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES • Accessing diamonds means overburden. Overburden is removing natural resources from our Earth and disturbing our surroundings. • Use of energy • Recyclable
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES CONT. • Example 1: Soil used to be rich, but now are mosquito infested in Sierra Leone. • Example 2: Large areas of land has been ruined and the water supply is poisoned in Angola.
CULTURAL CONSEQUENCES • Conflict Diamonds (Blood Diamonds) – rebels from western/central Africa, Sierra Leone, Angola, Ivory Coast, and Democratic Repuclic of Congo (DRC), would sell diamonds illegally. • The money goes to their countries military actions. • 71 governments go by the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme.
WHAT DOES THE INDUSTRY SAY IT’S DOING? • Diamond-mining destroys the environment around it. • Example: Loss of soil and plantation fields due to mining debris in Sierra Leone. • Millions of people have died, suffered injuries, or been displaced because of conflict diamond trade.
HOW TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM? • More governments should get involved and help donate to stop this conflict-diamond issue because it’s killing innocent people. People are suffering just because all of this money is going towards their countries military actions. • http://www.stopblooddiamonds.org/
CONFLICT-FREE DIAMONDS • Retailers can’t guarantee you a conflict-free diamond. • This means, get the specific details about the diamond you want to purchase! • Purchase diamonds from Canada because Kimberly Process.
