Contraceptive use patterns among 9394 women attending to a metropolitan Family Planning Center in Turkey Dilbaz B, Çalışkan E, Turgal M, Yıldırım D, Taşçı Y, Haberal A Ankara Etlik Maternity and Women’s Health,Education&Research Hospital 9th Congress of the European Society of Contraception 3-6 MAY 2006 ISTANBUL/ TURKEY
OBJECTIVE • In this study; we evaluated the contraceptive use patterns of 9394 women attending to a metropolitan Family Planning (FP) center between 2000 and 2005.
MATERIALS & METHOD • Computerized hospital database (Patient registration programme)was used to evaluate the contraceptive use patterns of applicants • The data was analyzed statistically • Data recorded were -age -literacy -obstetric history -fertility goal -current use or nonuse of a contraceptivemethod -desire for sterilization -contraceptive effort
RESULTS-1 • A total of 9394 women were recorded. • The mean age of the patients was 33.5 ± 7.4 (range 17-50). • Of all the patients; -1.2 %, adolescent -74.2%, reproductive age -24.5%, perimenopausal women. • Parity: Multiparous women were the most frequent (78.3%) group, followed by primiparous women (19.7%) and grand multiparous women (2.0%). • The mean number of living children was 2.8 ± 0.9 (range 0-5).
RESULTS-2 • The most frequently used contraceptive method among the study population was IUD (54.2%). • Other contraceptive methods; - withdrawal (29.9%) - no method (5.6%) - hormonal (5.4%) - female sterilization (4.1%) - vasectomy (0.3%) - condom (0.0%) - voluntary termination of pregnancy (0.3%)
RESULTS-3 • 57.5% of women have stated that they wanted to have no more pregnancy. • Tubal ligation was more frequent in the illiterate group (17.2% vs 3.0%) while vasectomy was more common in the literate group (0.5% vs 0.2%) (p<0.001). • Most commonly used method in the illiterate group was withdrawal (37.3%) followed by IUD (33.6%) • IUD was the most commonly used method in the literate group (55.9%) followed by withdrawal (29.3%)
RESULTS-4 • The use of condom was very low in both groups (0.3% and 0.0% respectively). • Contraceptive effort was present in 95.6% of the women attending to the FP clinic, 3.5% have stated that they would like to have sterilization. • Desire for sterilization was significantly higher in the illiterate group (1.6% vs 2.7%, p<0.001). • Contraceptive effort was higher in the literate group (95.9% vs 91.9%).
RESULTS-5 • The most popular method among all age groups was IUD (48.4%, 52.4% and 58.4% respectively), followed by withdrawal (26.3%, 30.6% and 28.7% respectively). • Hormonal methods were most popular among reproductive age group (6.1%), and least popular in the adolescent age group (3.2%). • Tubal ligation was highest in the reproductive age group (4.3%).
The most widely used method was IUD in our patient group and traditional method use was still very high -the second most widely used method of contraception just similar to the findings of the last Turkish Demographic Health Survey (2003). • Counselling should be strenghtened in order to increase the use of modern methods and women who do not have any more children should be counselled thoroughly about sterilization.
