The events with an asterisk beside them can all advance to Nationals.

  3. Overall Changes Added grid at top of each competitive event including: • National E & T Knowledge and Skills, • TEKS for all E & T courses, and • College and Career Readiness Skills

Overall Changes Continued • Took out all 1st and 2nd person • Minor word changes to make it more easily understood and less confusing • All Registration and Final Evaluation Forms and competitive events will be sent to the competitive events coordinator 35 day prior to the Teach Tomorrow Summit.

  5. Overall Changes Continued • All events start at Region and advance to State except Outstanding Chapter and Student of the Year. If students do not compete at Region, they can not compete at State. • “Judges and facilitators will not be allowed to work any event where they have students from their school district competing except if there is more than one room of competitors for the event.  The judge or facilitator can work in a room where he/she does not have students competing.” • All videos will be posted to YouTube and link or URL sent in on Registration and Final Evaluation Form.

Overall Changes Continued • Defined team in each event • Changed wording to read “may be asked to present on stage at one of the general sessions”. • Awards will be given out at one of the general sessions. • The list of winners will be posted prior to session where awards will be presented so that they can sit down front to keep the awards from taking too long. The regional officers and advisors will be asked to help with this.

  8. Advisor of the Year CHANGES: Reformatted to be uniform with all other competitive events. OVERVIEW: • The Texas Association of Future Educators’ Board of Directors authorized an Advisor of the Year Award beginning in 1996-97. Each region may nominate one advisor who is currently an active advisor in TAFE, whose school has been a member of TAFE for at least two years, who will then vie for the statewide honor.

Bulletin Board CHANGES: • Now a state event OVERVIEW: • The Bulletin Board Contest is an individual or team event that recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to create a bulletin board display for teaching and/or for student interaction. Participants must prepare a display board and an oral presentation introducing the display and summarizing how it could be used in a classroom setting to teach a lesson. The display board may be no larger than 36” x 48”.

Chapter Yearbook CHANGES: • None OVERVIEW: • This contest is a team event where members work together to create a historical record of their chapter’s projects and activities throughout the year. The yearbook events that can be included are the chapter’s participation in the previous year’s Teach Tomorrow Summit and all the events up to the current year’s Teach Tomorrow’s Summit. Participants must prepare a Chapter Yearbookand an oral presentationdescribing the activities of the chapter and summarizing the projects.

  11. Educational Leadership Fundamentals (ELF) CHANGES: • There will be an online practice test posted with rationales to explain why an answer is correct. OVERVIEW: • This is an individual event. Students will be tested over Educational Leadership Fundamentals. Participants will prepare for the test by studying the online study guide posted on the TAFE website. Test questions for the state assessment may be tied to information found in books on leadership. The suggested reading list will also be posted on the website.

  12. Instructional Multimedia Competition CHANGES: • The only change is posting videos to YouTube OVERVIEW: • This is an individual event. Planning, preparing, and delivering effective lessons are critical skills all educators must perfect. This competition challenges future educators to create a multimedia project that could be used as part of a lesson and write the lesson plan that incorporates the use of the multimedia project.

  13. Outstanding ChapterState event only CHANGES: • Reformatted to be uniform with other events. OVERVIEW: • Texas Association of Future Educators will recognize outstanding TAFE chapters for their contributions to future educators. The completed forms and the all required documents must be sent in in order to be considered for this award.

  14. Project Visualize Contest CHANGES: • None OVERVIEW: • The Project Visualize Contest is an individual or team event. That recognizes participants who illustrate one of their chapter’s projects. The project must be from one of the areas of the TRAFLES. Contestants will thematically construct a cardboard tri-fold display (36” x 48”). Participants must prepare a displayand an oral presentationintroducing the display and summarizing the project.

TAFE Student of the Year State event only CHANGES: • None OVERVIEW: • Texas Association of Future Educators will recognize an outstanding graduating senior with a scholarship for his or her contribution to the organization. . The amount of the scholarship will be $1000. Local chapters may nominate two scholarship applicants. One state winner will be recognized with the scholarship and the top ten finalists will be recognized with certificates at the Annual Conference.

Teacher Created Materials Contest CHANGES: • Renamed was Instructional Media (No technology) • Now a state event OVERVIEW: • Teacher Created Materials encompasses all the materials and physical means a teacher might use to implement a lesson and facilitate the students’ achievement of the objectives. This may include materials such as flip charts, board games, folder games, puppets, lap books, etc.... The Teacher Created Materials Contest is an individual or team event that recognizes participants who demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and ability to create a resource that can be used for teaching and/or for student interaction. Participants must create a teaching materials display and an oral presentation introducing the display and summarizing how it could be used in a classroom setting to teach a lesson. (The display is not a bulletin board and does not have to be on a display board.)

  17. Old Competitive EventsAll National Events Must qualify at Region to advance to State. Must qualify at State to advance to Nationals.

  18. Energy Education CORRECTION: • The Energy Education project can only be conducted at a local middle or high school OVERVIEW: • This is a team event. In this competition, the local TAFE chapter will plan and conduct an Energy Education for a local elementary, middle or high school. To participate, the chapter members must plan and implement an energy-themed series of lessons and activities for a grade level, selected classes, or the entire school. The chapter members can determine what their local Energy Education entails. The lesson should: • Include an energy-focused lesson that presents balanced, scientific information; • Engage students with hands-on activities, games, or competitions; and • Involve a variety of people, such as experts in the energy field in the process. • There are three components to this competition: • Energy Education • Project Portfolio • Presentation of the Portfolio.

  19. Essay CHANGE: • New article online - “Hunting for a Dropout Solution” by Joan Richardsonfrom the February 2011 issue of Kappan OVERVIEW: • Being able to express one’s thoughts clearly in written form is critical to success in almost any field, including education. In this is individual event, participants must prepare an essay based on the educational article posted on the TAFE website.

  20. Ethical Dilemma CHANGES: • New article online OVERVIEW: • This is a team event. In this competition, the chapter must debate an ethical education-related dilemma. This competition requires members to think deeply about an ethical issue and to employ critical-thinking skills and use persuasive communication techniques to collaboratively debate an ethical dilemma. Participants must prepare a presentation describing the process the chapter went through to reach a consensus.

  21. Impromptu Speaking Competition CHANGES: • None OVERVIEW: • Poise, self-confidence, and the ability to use effective oral communication skills while under pressure are valuable qualities of all educators. The Impromptu Speaking Competition is an individual event designed to recognize students who demonstrate these qualities by combining clear thinking and conversational speaking into an interesting presentation on a current education topic. Participants will prepare a speech on the educational topic given.

  22. Job Application CHANGES: • New job posted online OVERVIEW: • In this competition, entrants apply for one of two positions in the education field. (Position description can be found on the TAFE website.) This competition includes completing an online application, preparing a cover letter explaining why the entrant is a good candidate for the position, as well as developing a résumé that details relevant work, volunteer, and educational experiences. Then the competitor will be interviewed for the position. The interview will be conducted like any standard job interview. This is an individual event.

  23. Public Service Announcement Competition CHANGES: • FEA added it back as a national competition. • The only change for Texas is posting videos to YouTube OVERVIEW: • This event is a team event. The participants must prepare a PSA that evokes strong positive emotions about the teaching profession causing the viewer to consider the worth of the profession as an important career.

TAFE Lesson Plan Competition CHANGES: • The only change is posting videos to YouTube OVERVIEW: • This competition is an individual event where future educators will plan, prepare and deliver a lesson of their choosing to an actual classroom of students. Self-reflection following the lesson is an essential component of this competition as future educators begin the practice of honing their own teaching skills. Participants will prepare a lesson plan and a 10 minute video teaching the lesson to a class.

  25. Storybook Creation Competition CHANGES: • Now a national event! YEA!!!! OVERVIEW : • This is an individual or team event. The book may be written and illustrated by the author or shared with an illustrator, with the author or illustrator being the presenter. The participant will prepare an original short story book format that focuses on a specific, positive character trait and present it to the judges. Text and artwork may be either computer or hand generated. The story will leave its listeners with a moral lesson learned.

  26. TAFE Moment Competition CHANGES: • FEA added it back in as a national competition. OVERVIEW: • The TAFE Moment Competition showcases students whose TAFE experience has been a convincing factor in their decision to become educators. The speaker has up to three minutes to communicate this message. This is an individual event. Participants must prepare a presentation on the TAFE experience that convinced them to become an educator.

  27. TAFE Portfolio CHANGES: • Completely revised • Can be hard copy or electronic • Changed from Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD to Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced E-portfolio. • Each one builds on the next level • Advanced E-portfolio is a competition where the top 5 can advance to Nationals. OVERVIEW: • The University Portfolio contest is an individual event. Participating T.A.F.E. members will bring their portfolio to the Annual Teach Tomorrow Summit where it will be judged and then displayed for all attendees to peruse. Participants must prepare a portfolio and an oral presentation describing the information in the portfolio and summarizing the project.

Exploring Education Administration Careers OVERVIEW: • This is an individual event.  Competitors will job shadow an education administrator for 8 hours then complete and submit four (4) career-exploration documents: • Administrator’s verification form • Interview form • Job Shadowing Time Log • Reflection paper • After completing the job shadowing and all documents, the competitor must prepare a PowerPoint presentation that will be presented to the judges.

  30. Exploring Professional Support Services Careers OVERVIEW: • This is an individual event. Competitors will select one specialized instructional-support professional that works within their school district and will receive permission from the professional to job shadow him/her for a total of eight hours, then complete and submit four (4) career-exploration documents: • Professional’s Verification Form • Interview form • Job Shadowing Time Log • Reflection paper • After completing the job shadowing and all documents, the competitor must prepare a PowerPoint presentation that will be presented to the judges.

  31. Inside Our School Purpose: • The Inside Our School competition allows TAFE chapter members to explore best practices in teaching within their school or school district, and provides an opportunity for them to document the practices in a presentation by working collaboratively on a project. The video should appeal to students who are interested in the field of education. General Information: • At least two student representatives who participated in creating the video must be registered and present at the conference. • Entries must be four-five minutes. The video must include student names and grades, school, competition name, and title of project. • The video should include the following: students actively engaged in learning, why this best practice was selected for this project, and show final student outcomes of the lesson (for example, this could include a final product or student interviews).

  32. KeynoteSpeech (National - Public Speaking Competition) OVERVIEW: • An individual eventthat is designed to highlight students who demonstrate valuable skills for all educators by combining thoughtful preparation and confident delivery into an interesting presentation on a current education topic.  Students will prepare a two to three minute speech (approximately 300 to 500 words written) on homelessness.

  33. Researching Learning Disabilities OVERVIEW : • This is an team (2-4 people) event.  There are two components to this competition: a 10-page research paper and a PowerPoint presentation. • There are five specific learning disabilities: dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and dysphasia (also known as aphasia or global aphasia). The education-related act that ensures services to students who have been diagnosed with a learning disability is called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

  34. Service Projects Presentation OBJECTIVES: • To showcase a chapter service project that adds a valuable contribution to their community or school. OVERVIEW: • This is a team event. Participants must prepare a displayand an oral presentationintroducing the display and summarizing the project.

  35. TAFE Recruitment and Marketing Presentation OBJECTIVES: • To illustrate various ways the local TAFE Chapter recruits and markets the TAFE program in their school and community. • To create a greater awareness of the importance of the impact the local TAFE chapter has in the future of education. OVERVIEW : • This competition is a team event where the TAFE members focus is expressing creative ways to increase awareness of the local TAFE chapter in the school and community and to increase membership. • Participants will  prepare a written presentation, visual display and oral presentation (to • accompany the visual display on competition day).

  36. National Events • The top five (5) in all National FEA events will advance to nationals. • The guidelines for nationals may be a little different, therefore it is the advisors and students responsibility to comply with national guidelines before competing at nationals.
