Who is Mrs. Smith? • Education: • BA Elementary Education • MA Early Childhood Special Education • Doctoral work in Language Acquisition and Development • National Board Certification in Literacy: Early and Middle Childhood • Experience: • 36th year in elementary • University courses in education • Home Life: • 2 daughters (25 and 21) and 1 long-haired cat!
Student Development in First Grade • Independence • Tying shoes, classroom work, cleaning up own spaces, managing backpack and supplies • Friendships • Primary concern! • Sometimes, it’s a love-hate relationship… • Experiences • Students learn by doing! The more active and engaged they are, the more they will learn.
Daily Schedule 7:40 Arrival Specialists: 7:50 School day begins Tuesday - PE 7:55 Specialists Wednesday - Music 8:45 Reading/Writing Block Thursday - Art 10:45 Recess/Lunch Friday - STEM 11:45 Handwriting Math (Rotating PE on certain Mondays and Wednesdays) 1:15 Recess/Snack 1:30 Science/Social Studies/Heath (flex time) 2:20 Dismissal *Library will be on Mondays at 9:55 *Monday is Early Release – dismissal at 12:50

Homework What to Expect Weekly: • Reading Log • Sight Word Practice • Math • Family/Long term projects will take the place of homework • If your child is struggling or not meeting learning goals, I will contact you with suggestions FAMILY TIME IS IMPORTANT Children work hard at school and need time to process new information

Class Birthdays • If your child’s birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, we will celebrate on the Friday before or Monday after. • If your child’s birthday falls during a school break (winter, mid-winter, spring), we will celebrate on the Friday before or Monday after. • If your child’s birthday is over the summer, we will celebrate their half birthday If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know!
