  1. The 49’ Gold Rush By Sara Peterson

  2. What is it? • gold rush • –noun a large-scale and hasty movement of people to a region where gold has been discovered, as to California in 1849.

  3. When was it? • The California gold rush began on January 24, 1848 when James Marshall found some gold in Coloma, California. • The Gold Rush ended in 1859, when silver was discovered in Nevada.

  4. 1849 • When the Gold Rush started in 49’, about 300,000 people came to California. • Of the 300,000, about half of them came by sea. Many came from China and South America. • The other half trekked across the U.S. to California

  5. Indians • About 100,000 Californian Indians were killed between 1848 and 1868. • Natives were attacked and pushed off their land by gold prospectors. • Some people even hunted the Indians for sport. • Others forced them to work for them as slaves.

  6. Women • Women played a major role in the Gold Rush. • At first there were few women, most were either a captain’s wife and other high-society women. • Because there were so few women, men would pay high prices to see one. Because of this, many people started whore-houses. • Many women chose to become prostitutes and become rich. • Others dressed as men because it was the only way to escape the life of a prostitute.

Chinese • The Chinese first came over to California in 1849, seeking “Gum San.” (The name given to California by the Chinese.) • During the Gold Rush, the population of Chinese grew to 116,000. • The population grew so large, that there was even small Chinese towns. Where everyone spoke either Chinese or Cantonese, and all the signs were in Chinese.

  8. What does this have to do with me now? • The California Gold Rush may be more important than most realize. California wouldn’t be the same today if they hadn’t discovered gold there. • The Gold Rush is such a big part of Californian history, that even today, the name of one of their NFL football teams is name the San Francisco 49’ers. • Also, California’s diamond jubilee half dollar has the picture of a man panning for gold. • Because California became a state due to increase in population, the controversy of whether it was to be a free state or a slave state was what sparked the civil war, changing U.S. history.
