Detail of Academic Tasks INT418 • AT1: Test1 Lecture #14 (Before MTE) • AT2: Test2 Lecture #28 (After MTE) • AT3: Quiz Lecture #35 (After MTE)
Course Objectives • • To understand the basics of mobile computing and pervasive computing. • • To study about the underlying wireless networks. • • To understand the sensor and adhoc networks and to develop mobile computing environment.
Course Contents • What is it? • Who needs it? • History • Future • Course overview • Literature
A computer in 2017 • Advances in technology – More computing power in smaller devices – Flat, lightweight displays with low power consumption – New user interfaces due to small dimensions – More bandwidth – Multiple wireless techniques
A computer in 2017 • Technology in the background – Device location awareness: computers adapt to their environment – User location awareness: computers recognize the location of the user and react appropriately (call forwarding) • “Computers” evolve – Small, cheap, portable, replaceable
What is Mobile Computing? • Aspects of mobility – User mobility: users communicate “anytime, anywhere, with anyone” (example: read/write email on web browser) – Device portability: devices can be connected anytime, anywhere to the network
What is Mobile Computing? • The demand for mobile communication creates the need for integration of wireless networks and existing fixed networks – Local area networks: standardization of IEEE 802.11 – Wide area networks: GSM and ISDN – Internet: Mobile IP extension of the Internet protocol IP
What is Mobile Computing? • Mobile Computing : A technology that allows transmission of data, via a computer, without having to be connected to a fixed physical link. • Mobile voice communication is widely established throughout the world and has had a very rapid increase in the number of subscribers to the various cellular networks over the last few years.
Why we are studying this course? • An extension of this technology is the ability to send and receive data across these cellular networks. This is the principle of mobile computing. • Mobile data communication has become a very important and rapidly evolving technology as it allows users to transmit data from remote locations to other remote or fixed locations. • This proves to be the solution to the biggest problem of business people on the move - mobility.
Application Areas • Vehicles • Nomadic User • Smart mobile phone • Intelligent house or office • Meeting room/conference • Taxi/Police/Fire squad fleet • Disaster relief and Disaster alarm • Games • Military / Security
Nomadic Computing • Nomadic computing is the use of mobile computing technology to connect to the global Internet or use specific data resources from a stored location while moving around from one place to another.
History • Proxim's High Speed RangeLAN5 product family RadioLAN’s products for indoor wireless communication
Literature • William Stallings – Wireless Communications • Jochen Schiller – Mobile Communications / Mobilkommunikation • Fundamentals of mobile and pervasive computing - Adelstein Frank, Sandeep K. S. Gupta • Andrew Tanenbaum – Computer Networks, plus other books • James D. Solomon – Mobile IP, the Internet unplugged • Charles E. Perkins – Ad-hoc networking • Plus other books on specialized topics
The Future • With the rapid technological advancements in Artificial Intelligence, Integrated Circuitry and increases in Computer Processor speeds, the future of mobile computing looks increasingly exciting. • With the emphasis increasingly on compact, small mobile computers, it may also be possible to have all the practicality of a mobile computer in the size of a hand held organizer or even smaller.
